Important evidence of the local flora and fauna of the period and some signs of occupation by Neanderthal humans have been found there. In 1897, George Hardey Barrett-Lennard purchased a large tract of land and named the property “Belhus”, after the family estate in Aveley, England. The name Aveley was approved in 2006. It depicts a circular medallion with the arms of Norris impaling De Vere, both with quarterings for Sir William Norris and Jane his wife, grandparents of Mary Barrett (née Norris).
